So trivial and also very important

Hello friends! I know that you have excellent taste and I am wondering if I can draw on it.

Let me sum up: I HATE MY HAIR! I NEED SUGGESTIONS AND OPINIONS! HELP!

This is how I seem to live my life. I let my hair grow until it is past my shoulders and I love it so much for a while because I can pull it back and keep it out of my face and off my neck and all is delightful.

And then all I do is pull it back, because my hair is very fine and flat and once it gets long it basically looks like you've cooked an entire box of spaghetti and then draped it in a single row very carefully from the crown of my head. Flat. So flat.

I'm not a fan of products because I don't like how they feel. So once it hits a certain point, it is flat. So it only looks OK pulled back.

I get to that point and then I am all, you know what would solve my life? A Delightful Pixie Cut! With a ton of bleach!
And then I head to the salon and get my hair all chop chop chopped and then after a few months I realize that I really want long hair.

Then I spend the next year or so with frustrating in-betweeny hair.

And then, then guess what happens? Right.

So. This time! This time will be different! I am actually going to give it some thought and find a picture or two. This time, I am not going to get a pixie cut!

I'm going to get...something. Something else.

Is an asymmetrical bob too last year? Too close to what I always do? My favorite haircut ever was short over one ear and sharply tapered to the chin on the other side. But that was in high school.

(And is not to be confused with the time I shaved the one side into a Cyndi Lauper crisscross.)

As a boss once said to me when we were discussing fashion, if you were there for the first go-around, probably best to skip the second.

But this is quite elegant, and much subtler. But too last year? Does that matter?

I also love love love this haircut but I do not know. Nick says I will regret the bangs. And I might not have thick enough hair for it to look like this. Not sure. (Also, please excuse the totally chipping nail polish. I almost never polish because I suck at maintaining.)
So those are my thoughts.

Open to and grateful for suggestions.

  1. I liked your hair short, not the pixie but to your chin. Us fine haired gals do well with shorter hair.....I think. I got mine chopped on Tuesday and I think I like it. Its a bit shorter than I wanted but she layered the back a little and it has some bounce :) I also think it's all about what you feel you can manage on a daily basis. My simple request was to be able to tuck my hair behind my ears. Miss ya!

  2. Thanks, Kristin! I think it's true with the shorter. I bet it's very cute even though shorter than you wanted! Your hair never, ever looks flat, though. Even when it gets longer. Hugs to you!

  3. I love it short. Rules are meant to be broken! I took in a TON of pictures last time. All were long shags. SHAGS!! They went out how long ago? But I am wearing a long shag now and have had so many compliments since I went in and had her thin it out and start me on my way. Break the rules and do what you think you look best in regardless of the year it was "in"

    1. I think you are right - need pictures for sure. I've gotten much better cuts when I bring a picture. I also agree that you need to do what suits you best, no matter what. I've had some version of a bob for decades now (with insanely short in betweens).

I've been informed that the asymmetrical bob is high maintenance, and I cannot handle that. Soooo....still undecided.

  4. I bet Beyonce's asymmetrical bob would look fab! Love the look and it seems you have the right face shape for it!
(The truth is, though, every time I see you, you and your hair look great. This is not false flattery.)

    1. Carm, you are sweet sweet, and I believe you are being sincere! Thank you! (I envy your thick, gorgeous, blondie blonde long hair!)

  5. I love your hair bleached with the pixie cut. You're one of the few people I know who can pull it off. I also like cut pictured in the bottom photo (the "Jane from Melrose Place" cut).

    1. Thanks, Wendy. I love it for about 15 minutes at a time. I feel so free and kind of bold...but then I miss having hair. I don't know that I will go back to that anytime soon.

And it is funny you said that - I loved Jane from Melrose's hair! And I haven't thought about her in years, but of course I would pick the same cut!

  6. FYI, apparently there is a cut called a Bixie - in between a bob and pixie. I think you'd rock it. :) http://www.latest-hairstyles.com/trends/fine.html

    1. Hey, thanks, Jeanne! I like this site - it's nice to be able to flip through variations on a cut! And the Bixie, which I'd never heard of, is cool and attractive. I have to give that some thought. It might bug me. I don't have all of your fabulous hair. I need to think about how it's distributed...

  7. Oh my gosh I thought you were in my head because that is exactly what I do! Rinse, repeat, over and over and over and over. The good news it never gets boring, the bad news is we're never where we want to be, are we? We are always on the way to a look..and then when we get there we're not happy.

Maybe our goals are just messed up?

If your hair is flat when long, then maybe a few layers or a cute shorter cut (like a couple of inches beneath your jawline) would work. You look great with that length, it's still long enough to pull back in a pony, the weight doesn't appear to be an issue at all at that length, and if frames your face nicely.

I'm with you on the products. Sometimes I smooth a little serum into my now rather curly hair to keep it from frizzing...but my stylist says that doesn't really count. I guess there is a weight, like motor oil, that one must apply before a product counts as that...

The good news, Miss L, is that no matter what you, you'll look great. It's more an attitude than a 'do.
    :)
    Good luck!

YES! EXACTLY! Some people just pick a nice hairstyle for them and then stick with it and they look great and are happy.

(There's probably a larger life lesson here?)

      Big hugs to you, Stevie!

  8. That long bob will only look like that picture for about 15 minutes after you walk out of the salon, after that you are back to your ponytail! I like the bangs pixie…it would look fabulous on you! Also, to go against Nick, I love those bangs. Go for it!

    1. Gretchen, I think you are exactly right. The rest of the time, ponytail.

I like the cut...he makes a point about the bangs. I start to get a little twitchy when I can't tuck my hair behind my ears. But if they are long bangs, I won't be that far away if I get bugged.

As for the Madeline login - makes me laugh and yes! Investigate!

  9. Oops, Madeline is actually Gretchen (Robbins)…I guess my 8 year old daugther was logged into blogging software something I will have to investigate!

  10. I have bangs. I love them, but they are high maintenance and require a trim every 2-3 weeks. Also, I have to wash my hair every day or my bangs look ridiculously greasy (due to the combination of my oily skin and fine hair.)

    1. I could not manage a trim that often. Or anyway, a professional one. I would wind up chopping them myself!

  11. If you don't get that second haircut I will. My last cut was a slightly modified version of this cut http://www.short-haircut.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/01/Best-short-bob-haircuts-2013.jpg and I love love love love it. I have dreams of growing it out into this http://www.look.co.uk/sites/default/files/imagecache/scaled_620px_wide/rita-ora-short-hair-main.jpg but as a fellow fine haired girl the chances of my hair holding that are slim to none... but I am really really into that second photo you posted. I might just steal it. I'm in Canada, far enough away that nobody will know if we get the same cut ;)

    1. Do it! Even if we lived in the same place, I wouldn't care if we got the same cut! I also don't get upset if I have on the same dress or whatever as someone else. I love the first picture! Second one is a little too deliberately messy for me. I couldn't manage it, even though it is cool.
