One free food?

I was thinking wouldn't it be great if you could have one food that you could eat as much of as you wanted without it affecting you adversely?

Like, it wouldn't count at all towards daily calories, cholesterol, etc. The rest of your food intake would be as it always is. But this one thing would be free.

I started to think that for me, it would be chocolate. But then I thought, maybe I'd get sick of chocolate if I could eat as much as I want, all the time. So perhaps a pasta dish? Or beer?

I feel like it should be the thing I eat/drink that's most terrible for me. Probably something with a lot of fat, though, since it's a freebie.

If this were real, and you could pick your freebie...but you only get one. And once you choose, that's it for life.

What would you choose? And how do you pick?

  1. I'd have to choose peanut butter. I'm nearly 40 and I eat it almost every day (even if it's just one or two crackers with PB&J on them)

I'd love to say french fries, or apple pie or ice cream, but I eat those less than I eat peanut butter.

  2. If "all alcohol" counted as 1 thing, I'd pick that. I'm sure it would knock a decade or two off my lifespan tho. So maybe I'd go with cheesecake.

  3. Cheese. No discussion required. Just cheese. Every kind of cheese (except blue because eww.)

  4. Bread, I think. Or butter. Probably butter.

It's in SO much of the things that I eat - does this mean it would eliminate the butter calories in, say puff pasty dough?

  5. cla517 - I didn't even think of PB, and I eat it for lunch almost every day. And sometimes I just eat it on a spoon. With honey or with chocolate chips.

Mb - That'd be the beauty of this - it would have no adverse effects. No decades knocked off, no extra wrinkles.

Hillary - Agree. I hate all bluey cheeses - Stilton? So gross.

  6. Without hesitation - ice-cream. My Gramma Books ate ice-cream everyday and lived 101 years. I love ice-cream and it's part of my being just like water. Come to think of it, water is a freebie too so there's another argument for ice-cream.

    Fun question!

  7. Dagny - Butter! Yes! So smart! Yes, it would knock butter out of every single thing you put it in. Think of the calories and fat saved! Butter!

HKW - I love that your Gramma Brooks ate ice cream every single day.:) And if ice cream were like water! Oh, lovely!

  8. I'm with Hillary. Cheese... almost any type. I even like blue. But not crazy things like Casu marzu. Google it, but only if you haven't eaten in a while and don't have a drink handy.

  9. Donuts. Fried! Fatty! But oh so delicious.

  10. chocolate cake (made from a box like betty crocker or duncan hines) with chocolate icing from a can. possibly with dinosaur or pirate displays made of sugar on top.

  11. Pizza. It's the breakfast of champions, has tons of variety and includes the ever important cheese which may be one of the best things man invented.

Also, how can you not like blue cheese?

  12. Ok, I'm tempted to say butter now that I've seen this salient point - and I eat a ton of butter on its own too.

I still have to go with cheesecake though. It comes in so many delicious flavors that you can never get sick of it! It's got cream and cheese in it! Delicious!

  13. If I say "pasta" does that include all types? Or do I have to choose just one? Does it include the sauce?

That said, I might have to go with the classic chocolate. Plain. Simple. And available in oh so many forms.

  14. VVK - I know - that's one of the grossest things I've ever heard of evereverever. Eeee!

Jennie - Oh, man. I almost never eat donuts for this very reason. So many empty calories. I seriously pause and inhale deeply every time I pass Krispy Kreme on Dupont Circle. I gaze in longingly. And then keep walking. But if they were no calories???

K-Tee - I LOVE cream cheese or chocolate frosting straight from the can. Love love love. In fact, most cake for me is a vehicle for the icing.

Girl With Curious Hair - I love pizza for breakfast. Cold, hot, whatever.

As for the cheese - I'm not really a cheesenivore. There are lots of strong cheeses I dislike.

KLZ - Butter is such a clever one. But cheesecake is so delicious.

FoggyDew - Hmm. I hadn't really thought this through. I suppose it could go either way, right? Like, lasagna could be your one thing. Or any kind of pasta noodle, but not the sauce, cheese, etc. I don't know. I don't really have the made up details down.

  15. I'd like to say sugar. But maybe I should pick that partially hydrogenated crap that's in everything. Yep, that's what I'd pick cause I can live with fake sugar. As long as we're playing can we change the rules to say we get to pick one thing a year? Oh wouldn't that be neat? Or, you could just be born a male and not have to give a shit at all.

  16. I think it's gotta be pizza. I eat that more than anything else pretty much.

Or can I count rose wine as a food???

  17. i was going to say my white star champagne because i'd love to not have to pay for it and yet have it whenever i want. then again, i really love salt on/in EVERYTHING, even though it's hella affordable. oh well, i guess it would be a toss up between the two. and salt would probably win because some day i'm going to have to give it up or suffer a heart attack
    so, salt.

  18. Pasta. For breakfast, lunch and dinner. :)

  19. Either pizza, cheeseburgers or steak. Or maybe french fries. Or cheese. This is tough! Ok, I choose pizza.

  20. garlic bread. omg buttery cheesy good garlic bread.

  21. Lynn - I love the modification of one a year. It might be that you get sick of your choice before the end of the year. And yah, we could be men and not give a shit. Unless you're married to me, in which case you'd be harassed so regularly it would be hard not to give a shit...

P - You absolutely can count wine as food for your freebie! No question!

notsojenny - That's a very interesting take on it, and a really smart one. I hadn't thought of looking at it from a purely health-benefit perspective. I, too, like the salt.

    Beach Bum - Excellent choice!

kayare - Oh, I love love love pasta. I can even eat it leftover and cold. With my fingers. Straight out of the fridge.

Stevie - Of all of those, I'd definitely choose the pizza.

Miss Dallas - I understand that, for sure. Every once in a while I am shocked at how many calories a really delicious beer has.

    Jennifer - Of course!

Brett - That definitely packs in a lot of fat, carbs, and deliciousness!

  22. Cheese of every sort. Cheese on crackers, grilled cheese, cheese with fruit and jam, cheese with bread, a giant cheese plate for breakfast every day. Yum! Laura

  23. big cheezits.

    or chipotle.

  24. Pizza, breakfast, lunch, dinner. If we get a fantasy food, why not a fantasy beverage? Yeah, pizza n' beer!

  25. Butter!

    So. Brilliant.

Buttered Rum Drinks = suddenly not so sinful!

  26. Definitely cheesecake. Must. Have. Cheesecake. But not any ole cheesecake. It has to be the good stuff. Mmmmm cheesecake. Now I'm sad I can't eat cheesecake every day. *sigh*

  27. While my first thought was "bread!", followed closely by cheese, I have to go with pizza. As someone else said, there are tons of varieties. So I get my two favorite things in one, plus lots of other yummie things on top. Chocolate pizza, anyone? Fruit pizza? Steak pizza?

  28. Tater tots. Oh yes...they would be mine. ;-)

  30. So I read this post like, the day you posted it, and I've been trying to figure out what ONE food I'd pick to have without consequences. It's way too hard, though. I guess it would probably make the most sense for it to be something really fatty or really carb-heavy, since I love both those things wayyy too much. Could it also be a food that won't cause me any indigestion or heartburn, in addition to not having calories and stuff? Cuz then it would definitely be Chili's boneless buffalo wings. Mmmm...but OUCH. My intestines burn with ferocity every damn time.
