When you sleep, where do your fingers go?

I'm pretty sure I'm right when I say that 4:30 am is pretty much the best hour for waking up and fretting.

I mean, what else is there to do when you're randomly awake at that hour?

I tried breathing deeply. I tried thinking the boringest thoughts I could come up with. I tried emptying my mind and making myself sink into the mattress.

Nothing doing.

I'm a sleeper. I like to sleep. I am not a night owl, nor am I an early bird. And why are both of these birds? I never noticed that before.

Yet, there I was, at the pre-crack of dawn, wide awake.

I got myself out for a run at 5:45. By then it was light and there was no hope of falling back asleep. Whenever I exercise early, and it's clear and beautiful outside, I think, "Oh, I should always get up and run before work!"

So I've been up since 4:30. It makes for a long-ass day. I already feel like it should be Wednesday, you know?

  1. I feel for you, I do. Sorry it's been a long day, I'm right there with you. You're lucky the sun gets up earlier in DC than Austin, I have to wait until 6:15 or so for light and to go for a run.

I think the early bird gets the worm and the night owl is on watch? -HK

  2. I was out and about early this morning too. And really, I could use a nap. But then I'd probably be awake at 5 am tomorrow.

Which means, I guess, that I'll just have to go for another run.

  3. I don't know, I think anywhere between three and five is pretty good for fretting. I know this from recent experience.

Also, your fingers go in your belly button. At least if you have an inny. I don't know where they go if you have an outy. Your nose maybe?

  4. I feel your pain. I had to be up at 5:20 yesterday and I feel like today should be Friday, or at least Thursday. There is nothing right about being awake that early.

  5. Maybe get up and write down a to do list if what woke you up are things you're worrying about for the day ahead. Or go for a run after the sun is up and get to work early.

  6. HK - I know you've been waking up crazy early for a while, and I know you're not a morning person. It's brutal!

Jessica - You, my friend, are one of those super motivated people who gets up on purpose at heinous hours to head to the gym. I admire it. I don't relate, but I admire.

vvk - Yes, good point. The three to five hours are great for fretting.

Probably your nose. I have an inny so I just have to guess. :)

    Hillary - No, there isn't. It's evil.

Mary - Actually, that's a great idea. I think the to-do list would make me feel better.

  7. Ugh I hate hate hate mornings. I was up 4:30-6 feeding/pumping today. I feel for ya.

Anyway why I am really commenting is because of your title, we are huge Cake fans, pretty much the only band I'll buy tickets to see live!

  8. Another option is to ping a friend that you can be pretty sure is going to be awake at that hour. Insomnia and all.

  9. Isn't that always the pits? I find that when I wake up at those early hours, I am up reading the news and of course it's never good. Then when I try to go back to bed, the baby always wakes up so it isn't as if I've gotten back into a nice, deep restorative sort of sleep.

As for the jogging, eh, no way Jose. It's too cold in Colorado even in June for that. And there are bugs out there. Blood suckers the size of my fist!

  10. i admire your morning run! i missed mine today... but that's my favorite time to be out there.

  11. I was up at 4.45 this morning as well. We should have gone for a walk.

  12. what happens when you are out running and the feel a powerful bowel movement coming on?

  13. Hey Lisa,

Even though I'm no longer blogging (thinking of making a come back and will let you know if I do), just want you to know I still read faithfully via Google Reader and love you to death.

I love hearing about Jordan's adventures and would love to see more photos of your house.

As long as you still feel like putting fingers to keyboard, I'll remain a faithful reader (and blog friend) :)
