You know how sometimes you hear yourself asking a question but it's already out before you can stop it?

If you don't live here, let me tell you, you've never heard so many sirens in your life. There is always an ambulance or fire engine, or police car passing by.

I think I always knew that there were a lot of police cars in the city, but I'm even more aware of them now, because Jordan loves them so much.

Sometimes police officers will see us gawking and will turn on the lights. It's like magic to Jordan.

So the other night Nick and I were out for a walk, stopped at a light at a big intersection. A cop car turned on its siren, sped through the light and down the street. It was really going fast.

It occurred to me that I would never be able to drive that fast in city traffic. I seriously can't imagine.

Which prompted me to say, "Wow. Do you think they get some kind of training in driving that fast?"

These are the kinds of questions that make Nick all sarcastic and all, "No. No training. I think they just say, 'Go ahead, drive this car as fast as you want! Turn on the siren if you want and just have fun with it!'"

  1. Yup I hear you although sometimes I ask a question like that to just see what DG's reaction is. I love the look on his face when he tries to patiently explain something to me then realises I am taking the P*&^
    Priceless!!

  3. Huh. I'm pretty sure they *don't* provide extra training for police officers where I come from. I think the assumption is that if you've survived driving in NJ urban areas at all, you're more than capable of a high-speed chase.

  4. This is totally a question I would ask without thinking. Except I've given high-speed chase driving / training more thought than I'd like to admit. - HK

P.S. I haven't been able to login to leave comments under my Blogger ID for a while. Resolution is beyond my I/T expertise.

  5. I'm pretty sure most precincts require their officers to take EVOC (Emergency Vehicle Operation & Control) courses at the police academy and annually thereafter.

  6. umm ok to anyone who has had trouble logging in to comment... When being asked to login in, untick the remember me box and then retick it. This seems to have completely cleared the issue up for me. Hope it works for you too.

  8. I think DC has a crazy amount of sirens. I've never heard them as often as DC. Which makes sense I guess because you have secret service and a city. I would need training to drive that fast. I am a stick to the speed limit lady.

  9. Go-Betty - :) You know, I should start doing that...

Jessica - Well, NJ is a different place entirely. I imagine you are right.

HK - You make me laugh! "Except I've given high-speed chase driving / training more thought than I'd like to admit."

And I don't know what the deal is, I really don't. It's so irritating.

Anonymous - That makes a great deal of sense. Which is why my question was just so stupid.

Go-Betty - Ugh, sorry about all the jumping through hoops. Thanks for commenting and sharing your expertise!

Grace - I'm pretty sure there are more sirens here than anywhere else on the planet. It's crazy.

And I am too chicken to drive that fast through city traffic, even with training.
