I'll tell you what I want, what I really really want

I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna, I wanna really really really wanna zigazig ha.

Um. Sorry. I got carried away.

So. This past year has been all about our house. And Jordan. And let's not kid ourselves. This is going to be the case for pretty much every year in the foreseeable future.

The house has needed so much more than we anticipated. And Jordan, well, he grows out of clothes every 15 minutes. But honestly, it's fun buying stuff for him.

It's not a negative. It just is.

What it means, though, is that Nick and I have been extremely careful about our own expenses. This has significantly curtailed my clothes shopping. Every clothing purchase I've made this year has either been really cheap (Liberty for Target) or extremely practical. And there haven't been many.

What I've discovered, though, is that it's fine. I see things, and I want them, or WANTWANTWANT them, and I don't buy them...and my life goes on just fine without them.

Which doesn't mean that I don't go window shopping on a regular basis.

Those high platform over-the-knee boots above? WANT. They're Calvin Klein and they're at Zappos. This is one of those I know for a fact that I don't currently and probably never will need kind of things. Might not even wear. Where would I ever wear them? But want, yes I do.These purple boots, which are Boden and sized for kids but I have small feet so could totally fit them plus they're cheaper because they're for girls? Want, yes I do. Need? Not so much.
Delicious velvet coat in berry, also from Boden? Want. Don't need one bit. I have plenty of coats.

The only thing I need, and these are actually very practical and come from Lands End, are black pants. I'm reluctant to buy skinny pants - one, because I was here for the trend the last time around, and two because I just don't know if I can pull them off - but I want to...

  1. First off, yes, you could totally rock those pants. And I love that coat, and wish a) someone with my skin tone could get away with wearing it, and b) lived in a place where it was cold enough to wear coats.

Now, about the boots. The purple ones are incredibly cute, but I always have a hard time wearing flat boots. I like a little heel. Which brings me to the over the knee boots. DROOL!! Oh my, those are hot! Alas, high heel boots are out of the question for me for... at least another 9 months. ;)

  2. Oh, fun, very stylish! Agree, you could totally rock those pants. Boden is just great, too.

  3. LOVE the coat. Gorgeous! Makes me want to live somewhere that I'd need it. (Im in Florida) Also, I was around for the skinny trend last time too. NO. NO. NO.

  4. Just have to say I think that philosophy of not wearing a trend when it comes back around just because you wore it the first time is kinda bullshit. If it looks good on you, wear it, if it doesn't, don't. Otherwise you are stuck wearing some 5 year old trend and looking dated because of some fashion rule someone made up because wearing clothes similar to ones they wore when they were younger reminds them of how much older they are now. I'm assuming that is the case, because that is what would give me pause. I say if it makes you feel old, skip it, but if you've still got the legs, boobs, neck, waist, ass, toes... to be flattered by the trend, go for it!
All this from a woman who mostly shops in desperation once my clothes are obviously too worn out even for me to wear. Still, I've been wearing skinny jeans for about 3 years now because they suit me. Long skinny shirts, however, much as I wish they did, do not. Nor do the high waisted trousers, but if I could, I would.

  5. I have giant calves so I pretty much cannot wear boots. I have one pair of boots and it took me years to find them. I have boot envy is what I'm saying. You should probably buy the Calvin Kleins so I can live vicariously through you.

  6. Is there a 12 step program for this? Although, I could say the same thing about myself when it comes to electronic devices. New laptop: want. New telephoto zoom lens: want. New skis (OK not electronic, but still fun): want.

You could always wear the high boots to Jordan's first day of pre-school.

  8. I'm right there with you. I did a bad thing and ordered a leather jacket last week (http://goo.gl/55Ss) because I want want wanted it and had a 20% off code. But then two days later I changed my mind and canceled the order. Because I need a new wheel bearing in my Jeep, Dave's truck needs a headgasket, we need balusters for our deck project, our wedding is two weeks and we have to pay for our honeymoon. And buy Christmas gifts. And play the mortgage, bills, etc. So, long story longer! Now that I canceled the order, I still want, but I know I will survive JUST FINE. That's a good feeling.

Also, that berry coat is divine.

  10. Luna - Oh, yayyayyay! That's awesome news!

Also, maybe your next post will be somewhere cold enough for a coat? They have it in several colors. :)

HKW - I first heard of Boden from you, actually! You suggested a pair of boots quite a while back. And now I love them. Mostly I buy Jordan really cute jammies. :)

    Miranda - I know - sigh sigh!

cla517 - I thought Florida got cold in the winter? Not coat cold, I suppose.

Maude - On the one hand I agree that you should wear what suits you but I have definitely been hampered by the advice of don't wear it the second time around. I don't jump on trends just because they're trends, but I have pretty much avoided the return of the 80s. Maybe because I embraced them so fully and horrendously when they were here.

I know you look great in skinny jeans. I hate high waisted trousers, although I bet I could wear them.

Hillary - I don't have giant calves (and doubt you do) but they are substantial and muscular and I have to look for boots that fit. So these probably wouldn't anyway. I'll just decide that. I can't have them and they wouldn't fit.

FoggyDew - You know, there probably is. I just quit cold turkey. Shopping is much easier to give up than sugar, which I've also tried to cut out.

And thank you for the suggestion. Very practical.

Lisa - Aren't they so fun?! You are lucky! Betty and I are one half size apart, to my chagrin. We're just far enough apart that the same shoes never fit us both.

Kate Bee - Sigh. It's such a responsible thing to do. It looks like a great jacket, but I would've done the same thing. And maybe later it will be really on sale and you will be so glad you didn't buy it now!

As for the pants, I really don't know. Pants are hard for me.

  11. I started a whole big discussion on FB last week about how I want these:
    http://www.zappos.com/laredo-madison-burnished-red

But they are so not in the budget! Arg!

  12. Mmmm . . . I don't actually think you can have enough coats. But that's just me.

It's amazing how little you'll spend on yourself when house/kid come into being.

  13. if you're an impulse shopper, stay out of the macy's at metro center-- those calvin klein boots are of-so-prettily perched in the shoe department, front and center. i ogled them for a good 10 minutes today, myself.

  14. Those over-the-knee boots are HOT! Although they look like they'd only fit those with super-skinny calves. And I too have been on a bit of a shopping hiatus, but that's mostly because there's not much around here worth buying.

  15. I have that silly song bouncing through my head now. A song which I can't remember the title to, but the lyrics are screaming through my head. So thanks for that. ;)

  16. Both pairs of boots are big wants. God, I would loooooove to have those purple ones. Kind of silly to own, when we only have two months of very mild winters though. But if you're in DC and you have snow, how would they NOT be practical or something? Remember the snow pictures from this past winter? Very practical! It could happen again and you might be bootless? Black pants are a staple, and that means no guilt in buying them.

  18. I just started working again and can't wait for the day when I can stop window shopping and actually buy. My first purchase: a purse. It's calling my name.
