Have you laughed hard, like really laughed out loud, lately?
One of the things I am supposed to be doing in pregnancy is seeking joy.
They didn't put it exactly that way, but that's what it comes down to. They want you laughing and having sex and doing things that make you happy and up your endorphin levels.
And it occurred to me that apart from a giggle or a chortle here and there, and the occasional laugh out loud - but short laugh, not like laughing so hard you cry and it hurts - I have spent very little time laughing lately. Appallingly little.
Granted, I have been low on the humor front lately. I need to start seeking it out.
So I am wondering - has anything made you laugh out loud lately? A movie, TV show, stupid cat video, hilariously-written blog post, book, joke? If so, what?
I watch the Daily Show every day online during my lunch break, and it always makes me chortle. Plus my kids love to fart and then tell me about it with glee, and as inappropriate as it is, talking about toots with them makes us all giggle.
ReplyDeleteThis is probably weird in the same sentence but I do love Jon Steward and I definitely think farts are funny. I don't imagine I will ever be too old to think so, either.
ReplyDeleteI think the show The New Girl is funny, but some people find her annoying. I liked the naked episode and the Thanksgiving one. Also, old episodes of Flight of the Concords always make me laugh.
ReplyDeleteThis cracks me up every single time I watch it. My brother and I quote it all the time.

This made me practically choke on my lunch trying to keep my laughter down.

Actually, all those are funny.

ReplyDeleteIt might take a page or so, but the cumulative effect of a lot of hilarious Autocorrect iphone texts will have you laughing till you cry eventually.
1. Over Thanksgiving dinner, reminiscing about my dads terrible cooking. Defensive, Dad said "Your Mother intimidated me! Still does!" ...he meant she was bossy and wouldn't let him make whatever he wanted. My sweet, 5'2 Mom's response was to flex her bicep muscles like a bodybuilder and say "The Intomidator!" in a loud, deep voice. I cried from laughter.
ReplyDelete2. Go to YouTube and search "David Hasslehof Hooked on a feeling". No really, it will make you laugh and sing along.
3. YouTube search: Jon Stewart Bruce springsteen Kennedy center Honors
I'd include links but I'm using my iPhone and can't paste into comment box

ReplyDeleteThanksgiving and Halloween posts were funny
The Honey Badger might do the trick.

Stiffy Goat is hilarious.

And when all else fails, I watch Big Bang Theory.
Girlfriends make you laugh. I know alcohol mixed with GF's are the best laugh inducers. But even sitting at a pub, coffee house or some such with a friend or two drinking whatever and people watching can bring such joy....and sarcasm...which is the same thing isn't it?
ReplyDeleteAnd I second all the YouTube suggestions. And didn't you introduce us to that the Hofs YTube video? I died!
I love these:

Eddie Izzard. I can lend you some of his DVDs, if you like. Also, "Lamb" by Christopher Moore.
ReplyDeleteYes, Damn You Autocorrect, EVERY.SINGLE.TIME.
ReplyDeleteIellen didna clip on the worst pictures you've paid money for, and it was hysterical! Lots of classic eighties looks and some that just boggle the mind. Don't have the link but google it and it should come up! Enjoy
ReplyDeleteI third DYAC... it's hilarious! Some of them make me laugh so hard I almost pee my pants... since you're pregnant, you should take precaution.
ReplyDeleteWe've just discovered this dating show called Excused, which is hilarious only because of the host(ess) who is snarky funny and super hot too. It's also funnier if you've smoked a little pot, but isn't everything?
ReplyDeleteKent was reading to the kids the other night and came out of the room to see if I was crying. I was. I was crying because I was laughing so hard. The only thing that makes me laugh like that is America's Funniest Home Videos. There's just something about people getting stuck upside down in trees by their underwear and dogs acting stupid that makes me howl.
ReplyDeleteUmpteenth-ing Damnyouautocorrect. Also, http://parentsshouldnttext.com/. Hilarious.

The Graham Norton show on BBC is usually good for a few belly laughs. And another vote for damn you auto correct. :-)
ReplyDeleteA musical christmas card of monkeys singing jingle bells. No idea why it made me laugh so hard, it just did.
ReplyDeleteThe last time I had a really good make-your-abs-hurt laugh was over an oldie, John Ritter in "Skin Deep." Everyone probably remembers the condom scene, but IMHO the muscle electro-stimulation is funnier.

My three year old son is constantly making me LOL (which I'm sure you experience with Jordan), but recently he's wanted to bathe in the kitchen sink at night. Ok, whatever. After his most recent sink bath, he's standing up while I get the towel and says "Mom! I have balls in my pee pee! Dad! (While grabbing his um, sack.) There are balls in this thing!" I am so not equipped for the boy stuff. :)
ReplyDeleteI really enjoyed Mindy Kaling's book "Is Everyone Hanging Out Without Me?". It was just light and good. David Sedaris, if you haven't read him...
ReplyDeleteOh! And I loved "Things My Girlfriend and I Have Argued About" a book by Mil Milington. There's an accompanying website.

I have no idea what this says about me, but this was the last thing to make me laugh until I cried:

Actually, I do know what it says about me - slapstick, even in its most rudimentary forms, will get me every. damn. time.
Windy - I hadn't heard of the New Girl. I do love Flight of the Conchords - first season. We haven't watched it in a long time!
ReplyDeleteLisa - Thank you! There are some funny lines in there!
Ginger - I've only read a little bit of it so far, but bookmarked. She is funny!
tara - That is hilarious! I didn't get very far, but it honestly made me cry. That's the hardest I've laughed in a long time. Thank you!
HK - Your parents sound funny! I love the story! And thank you for the recommendations. I now have this hilarity list to go through! So awesome!
Lisa - Thank you! I clicked on Honey Badger but I don't have the stomach for everything he is eating...might try again post-preg! And I will check out the others!
Lynn - I truly miss going out and having drinks with girlfriends. They do really make me laugh.
And no, I didn't know about the Hasslehoff video. Excited to check it out!
C_Girl - Thank you very much!
Jessica - Oh, yes, please! I've only heard Eddie Izzard once, but he is funny! And I don't know Christopher Moore.
lifeversiontwo - I now have this in my Reader. How have I lived without it all this time?
Heidi - I will google, for sure!
Megan - So far I've cried, but no pee. Thank goodness. But thank you for the warning!
frugalveganmom - You are funny! And I will check this out!
Dana - People stuck in trees by their underwear would make me howl. I am going to google.
Tempest - Yes for DYAC. And I will check out the link! Thanks!
Aimee - Thank you! I am genuinely excited to have all these funny things to check out!
Keenie Beanie - Thanks! I don't know Graham Norton, but BBC humor definitely appeals.
fallenthropy - I love when random things just hit you the right way and make you laugh really hard. You can't describe it or necessarily repeat it but it's so funny in the moment.
J - I loved John Ritter but I've never seen Skin Deep! Thank you!
JJ - Ooh, thank you for all the recommendations and links!
I have thoughts - Thank you!
blonderthanyou - Wow. That's a great recommendation. Shakespeare has never made me belly laugh.
Mary - Yes, he does, he does! But man, that is funny! Jordan has not yet discovered his balls.
KLZ - Thank you! I like her on The Office and I read an interview with her I liked! And love Sedaris. I will check out Mil Milington!
Kate - I had to click because of the title, and I love it! I love people falling down, even though I know it's such a low form of humor. (It's even better when it's people I know, which is then both stupid and cruel.)

ReplyDeleteIf you like travel writers or Australia, check out Bill Bryson's "In A Sunburned Country". I've never laughed out loud while reading with any other book.
