Soooo, yah

So I was going to tell you how today Jordan is 14 months old. Hooray!

And how much I love Minneapolis, and how if I weren't such a weather wimp I could totally live there, because wow, it's beautiful and walkable and amazing and people are so friendly and also they have really good hamburgers and sticky buns.

And how I read Neil Gaiman's Graveyard Book, and how it is just such an wonderful, well written, charming tale.

And how as of last week I've been blogging for four years. Four! That's longer than I've held all but my current job.

But then I was like, what the fuck am I doing?

Does the world need one more I like to write and maybe I can be good enough to write a book that people want to read and I'm a mama and I'm so proud of my boy and I love my husband even though I put an imaginary heart attack on him and sometimes I fall down and draw pictures of it blog? Am I just barraging cyberspace with dull drivel? What is my point and does it even matter?

I mean really.

Is where I am.

  1. Well, yes. The answer is yes, provided that the authoress of said blog is you.

Maybe not need. Definitely really, really WANT. Except, then I think about it, and if it weren't for this here thing, I wouldn't know you, and I think I maybe need to know you, so. Maybe the world DOES *need* your blog. At least some parts of it.

  2. Of course you need to keep writing. I mean, that's just kind of a given.

  3. Wow - sounds like you need a break!

You are funny and real, and I look forward to your posts - humor, pathos, and all. I want to read all of that and I'm sure I'm not the only one... so when you're ready to write about it, your loyal readers will be waiting.

  4. there would be a whole in my blog-enjoyment if yours didn't exist.
and i agree about Minneapolis, lovely place but too damn cold from Nov on.
oh, and if by some awful dreadful way you do decide to stop blogging - i expect, nay DEMAND to nknow when your book comes out : )

  5. Dull? I haven't seen dull around here. Granted I'm a fairly new reader of your blog, but sometimes what one person considers dull is written in a very non-dullish way. You seem to have that mastered, if you insist on referring to your writing as dull anyway.

  6. your voice is funny, interesting and descriptive -- not angry or bitter like so many others -- what you say matters -- trying to live up to an ideal (whatever that is for you) is good but don't be paralyzed by the fear that you aren't meeting it

  7. Lisa! You can't just give us that baby and this blog and then take it away! Ackkk! I'm pretty sure there a million blogs out there. So any idiot that wants to move right along can do so. Those of us reading your words are here because we like it when you write about all sorts of things, your baby, your husband, your drawings, your shoes, reunions... your grief....please ignore your post vacation let down and tell us about your trip and how Jordan is. After all, we are all surrogate family here. I feel I know half your commenters too!
PS....anytime you all want to come to North Dakota I have a 6 bedroom 4 bathroom mansion you can stay at!
PSS how was the wedding and did you eat anywhere good? I go to MN a lot and I love it there too!

  8. It certainly matters! All of it. It matters to you and it matters to those of us that faithfully read. I LOVE your J posts becuase I have a daughter myself. I'm ridiculously proud that you stuck it out breast feeding despite PPD. (I quit because of mine). I love that you talked about your PPD and coming through it. (I couldn't admit it to anyone until my daughter was almost 2).

I love hearing about your job, and DC, and Nick, and Betty. Sometimes because I can relate and sometimes because your life is different than mine.

You are amazingly honest and funny and if you stopped writing, it would be a great loss.

  9. You are my morning breaktime read at work. What would I read if not your blog? The news? Please...it's too early in the day for that. I need your entertainment, preferably with pictures or videos. So yes, we (selfishly) do need you to keep blogging.

  10. I love your writing. You make me laugh sometimes, cry sometimes, think about things like poo and existentialism and overall, feel like a part of your inner circle - kind of. I hope you write that book!

  11. Well yeah, if you put it that way, the world doesn't need that. But as has been mentioned, it's that particular, peculiar, and very perfect alchemy, that is you, that keeps us tuning in.

I don't know how a book would come off; It's more stationary than a daily blog, which is fast moving, and so a whole 'nother critter.

But it's a bit of morning delight when I get to click on my RSS feeds and see what Lemon's up to!

  12. Your blog is the only one I read every day. From yime to time I've looked for other blogs to also read, but none of them keep me coming back like yours! Thank you!

  13. I agree wholeheartedly with Jessica.

  14. What they said! (Alas, I'm too tired to think up my own very complimentary and clever comment.)

  15. Yes Lisa the world does need you and your blog. Look at how many people you make laugh with your blog. I for one, though I probably shouldnt be saying this, read your blog as the first thing I do when I get to work, it starts my day, I look forward to it. I feel like I have this cyber friend on the other side of the world and its a great feeling. You have inspired and comforted me in many ways you dont even realise with your words. Jordan and Nicks antics make us laugh with you and god knows we all need more laughter in our lives.
You are valid and relevant and so very very special to us, your devoted readers. Now get off your arse and blog woman!

  16. A day without a post from you is always less brilliant. More, please. :)

  17. Seriously, don't stop writing! I know we all think of stopping every once in a while, but the truth is that you aren't really writing for us — you're writing for yourself.

The fact that we all love reading your "dull drivel" is an accessory to that fact.

  18. You may write about the same things that lots of others write about, but you have a unique voice that is funny, entertaining, and thoughtful. You're one of the few people that I really enjoy reading every day. Thanks for writing.

    ReplyDelete
  19. Yes, yes and yes! You aren't another writer, you're the writer I like to read

    ReplyDelete
  20. Dull drivel? Never that.

What is your point? Your point is to write blogs for me to read. It's all about me. Whenever you wonder why you're blogging, just think to yourself "I'm blogging for Nicole." LOL.

Does it even matter? Of course it does. I love reading your blogs. Every single word, every single post. Don't stop.

  21. Don't make me come over there and tie you to your keyboard. Where you are is just fine. There are at least...let me count...23 people who've chosen to tell you so and how you make their day a bit brighter with your tales of imaginary heart attacks, falling down, wild animal attacks and J. So don't you worry, you keep writing and we'll keep reading.

And, Yeaaaa! for the Graveyard Book. It is a great little story.

  22. yup! looks like we all like you ;)

  23. Four years? And I still remember the first time I met you and your feet.

You know I love this blog, but I hear you. Burn out happens. But you are a writer, it's how you express yourself. And look at all these people who are so glad you do.

There's nothing wrong with taking a break or setting a schedule. Except, if you're like me, there's nothing like writing a post to say you're going to post just once a week to make you want to blog every day.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Oh I hear you. I feel that veryvery often with my blog. The so-what-who-cares-about-my-boring-life. BUT. Your blog rocks, it really does! When I discovered you two years ago (wow, where DID that time go?) I went riiight back to the beginning and read from scratch. Now I wouldn't do that if you weren't witty and clever and just plain fab. Seriously.

And just this morning over breakfast I was saying how I was looking forward to BLD (and my husband looked at me askance - wha? 'You know, my blogging friend the one who posts the videos of her little boy)

AND my sister (who just had a baby last night!!) also loves your blog. She never comments but just two days ago she was saying how she hardly reads any blogs anymore but yours is one of them.

So. We all love your blog and you absolutely have to carry on. As a service to humanity, you understand.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Um, yes, we do need your blog.

    ReplyDelete
  26. I look forward to your posts. And I'm not alone. So, it's only good manners to keep on writing.
    Please and thank you.

  27. Oh sweetie! I'm chiming in late here (as always--why can't my job get out of the way of my blog reading???), but I'm glad you're out of the hole.

I can tell you that I have the same thoughts sometimes: why does anything I do matter? (esp. about writing) But here's the thing: it does make a difference, and maybe that group of people it makes a difference to isn't huge (I have an acquaintance who literally has thousands of followers on FB & Twitter; sheesh), but you are creating something wonderful because you are actually creating the thing that holds that group together. You are entertaining us and making us smile and think and laugh and also cry, and that's pretty dang awesome. Even if it seems like it's just our normal lives here, normal life is pretty amazing, right? Normal life is big, actually...

I don't feel like I'm articulating what I think about this; it's like there's this magical thing happening where we get to see each other's lives and feel connections. Something like that. But my point is: please don't stop writing to us.

Tell me about it.
