Mom jeans: a poll

Sometimes things feel difficult and overwhelming and like there are just too many things going on for me to wrap my brain and arms around.

In these times, I like to focus on truly, in the scheme of the world, inconsequential details. Like these jeans.

My mom ordered them for herself but then they were too small, so she asked me if I wanted them. I quite liked them, although I wondered if the length was a little funny on me. I dried them on hot and they did not shrink up, which doesn't mean I couldn't get them hemmed.

I put them on and asked Nick what he thought and he said, "Those are mom jeans."

And I said, "I'M A MOM."

Then I asked my fashionista daughter what she thought, and she just quietly looked at the floor. I told her it was OK if she didn't like them, because I like them, but I was wondering her opinion.

And still she looked away.

I wore them anyway. I think they're cute. Although the mom jean thing is weighing on me, even though I'm a mom.

Also! I am unsure about the length.

So, should I:

1. Get them hemmed
2. Wear them down
3. Wear them cuffed
4. Not wear them at all

?

I do realize that my work bathroom is not the ideal place to take flattering photos, and there is maybe a weird monitor thing going on with the stripes on my shirt, but life is life.

Also, I got these red clogs for Christmas and I am pretty fixated on all things clog right now.

They have been compared to Pope Benedict's red loafers—to which my friend Randy adds, "blood of the martyr!"—and Dorothy's ruby slippers.

I love them.

  1. My first choice would be to hem or cuff them (I think I rather like the cuff). If you leave them longer I think they need a different shoe.

    1. Thanks, Rachel! I quite like them cuffed. Also, I wondering if maybe boots might make the weird length OK. Very maybe.

    2. If boots don't do it, maybe a ballerina flat- maybe seeing some of your foot/leg would help it.

  2. I like the shorter length on you.

    1. Thank you! I am short, and as such, wide legs are a little tough, but I also love wide legged pants, so I'm giving it my best shot!

  3. I love them with the cuff and the clogs! What makes them "mom jeans"?
    Side notes:
-I still wear leggings 95% of the time after becoming a mom because they are always more comfy than jeans.
-I read in News of the Weird the other day about a Ukrainian fashion designer who is selling "asymmetrical" jeans - one leg tapered, one flared. Hahahaaa.

    1. I think the high waist makes them mom jeans. Now that I'm back in an office, but they've changed the dress policy, I wear jeans most days. Otherwise I'd be in leggings or sweats.

Someone left a photo of those jeans on my FB page. I think they're a horror, personally!

  4. 1. I like them both ways. I think wide legged pants have a very cool '80s vibe to them and what's not to love?
    2. Where did you get them from? I want 1 or 7 or 100 right away :)
    3. Also, maybe a different shirt? And, maybe not tucked in. Dunno, just a thought.

    1. I do love wide legged pants. I don't always look good in them, I think because of my lack of height.

My mom ordered them from a company I don't know called Wrap. I think maybe she got a catalogue in our Sunday paper? She's a sucker for those. They're nicely made, I have to say. Thick denim.

I think not tucked in I might look like a block. But I will try with a different shirt. I tucked in with a belt to emphasize the waist. Maybe a short shirt? I dunno.

  5. I love the shorter length on you. They look fabulous. I love cropped jeans they are my new favorite. You can wear them with any shoe..heels, sneakers, espadrilles, flats.

  6. Read this: https://www.nytimes.com/2019/01/16/style/clogs-no-6-moms.html

    1. Thank you!! :) I am embarrassed to say that I read that article and immediately ordered the Amazon jacket they linked to. Then my mom wanted one. We both wore ours and they kept us warm through the fractured Arctic whatever it was with the terrible cold weather. I also ordered Sven (rather than No 6 clogs). I am a sheep, apparently.

  7. I like them on the longer side. I think they look good on you and definitely with the shirt tucked in with the belt. I am too short for those but you are thin enough.

Tell me about it.
