Old MacJordan had a truck, E-I-E-I-O

One of the things that Nick discovered calms Big J down when he is flipping out - particularly on the changing table - is Happy Birthday.

So we sing, "Happy birthday to you..." Over and over and over.

Old MacDonald works equally well, and at least there's some variation. We were bringing him home past his bedtime last weekend and he was really screamy and cranky in the back seat.

And so we sang Old Fucking MacDonald. Allll the way home from Springfield. Which took, I dunno, somewhere near forever.

You go through all the animals you know. And then you start reaching. We took turns.

"And on his farm he had some...buzzards? E-I-E-I-O! With a buzz buzz here, and a buzz buzz there..."

"...And on his farm he had some okapi! E-I-E-I-O! With an ok ok here and a pi pi there..."

"...And on his farm he had a gin and tonic..."

At which Nick pointed out that we could actually recycle animals. It's not like J would know.

True, that.

Happy weekend, all!

With a week week here and an end end there...

  1. I think you should give 99 Bottles of Beer a try. Nice and lengthy, and the subject matter appeals to adults!

  2. I thought you should know that I now have E-I-E-I-O stuck in my head. And I kind of hate you for it.

(Just kidding! I could never hate you, hunny bunny!) Have a great weekend :)

  3. Our go to song for calming down the boy is "Pop Goes the World" by Men Without Hats. No idea what it is about the song, but it ALWAYS stops the crying. ;)

Old MacDonald always throws me for a loop when I can't figure out what noises an animal makes! Bunnies? Deer? Moose? Then it turns into a family debate, and Lord help us if we get on the subject of whether chickens say cocka-doodle-doo or ki-ki-ri-ki! So yeah, we stay away from animal songs.

  4. Lisa - Alas, I cannot. That song drives me pure up the wall. I think we sang it too many times in my youth, to be honest.

Hillary - I couldn't blame you if you did - it's a terrible tune to have stuck in the head.

Luna - I don't know that song, but I am totally willing to find it and try!

I know! So many animals with who knows what sound??! Plus you have to throw Spanish into the mix.

  6. so this is an adorable story but you want to know what SO VERY UNFORTUNATE story it reminds me of? one of my worst/funniest dates ever. it was with this guy on the track team in high school. i really liked him and he was a little quirky but im a little crazy so it seemed like it could be a good match? we get to the football game, as seems to be the number one date of choice in high school, and we're sitting in his car. i go to grab my purse to get out, and he says, "let's play a game!" sure, i like games, why not, i think. he says we need to sing old mcdonald. and that he'll start, and he'll be a cow. so he moo moos here and moo moos there (meanwhile im dying), and he turns to me and tells me it's my time to be a HORSE! i know. im not kidding. and seriously, who picks HORSE as their first go to?
    THIS IS MY LIFE.

  7. Funny! My kids loved Jesus Loves Me as the song that calmed them down.

  8. Haha, nice! It's definitely good to have more than one song. My three year old loves to sing to the 8 month old to help her stop crying, and she usually leads with Rudolph the Red Nosed Reindeer or ABC, or sometimes Jingle Bells (her version: ...Dashing through the snow, one open horse and sleigh...)

  9. Just wait until he learns, "This is the song that never ends." You will want to buy some earplugs.
